History Day in Hollypark: 19th February 2025

Our girls had a fun-filled day today marking History Day in Hollypark!

The day started with an exciting table quiz in the hall for classes 3rd to 6th.

Many girls dressed up as a character from history and proudly told us about their character.

4th Class girls designed wonderful posters which are on display around the school.

Classes did a variety of activities: visiting museums virtually, bringing old items to school from home; while others created timelines about their life!

It was wonderful to see our girls engaging with the past. Next week we will have photos in our newsletter giving you a snapshot of this fun-filled day!

‘The more we know about the past, the better prepared we are for the future’.

Hollypark GNS PA Update

Cyber Safety Talk: Monday 17th February

In an ever-changing digital world, CyberSafeKids* is a trusted advocate for online safety, empowering children, parents, and educators to navigate the internet safely and confidently.

Since 2015, Ireland's online safety charity, CyberSafeKids, has been dedicated to equipping children and young people with the skills they need to thrive in a connected world while staying protected from the challenges and risks it can bring. We tirelessly promote digital literacy, resilience, and responsible online behaviour.

We were delighted to welcome Aoife from CyberSafeKids to Hollypark on Monday evening when she delivered an excellent and informative talk to our parents.

Please see below link to CybersafeKids Digital Parenting Guide, which Aoife kindly shared with us:

Thank you to Mrs Marnell for organising this talk and workshops for 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Classes.

Thank you to our PA for providing tea/coffee on a dark gloomy evening. Thanks also to the PA for organising a pre-loved uniform sale which took place just before the talk.

CyberSafeKids Ireland Surveys & Report

In conjunction with the pupil workshops, surveys were sent to all pupils in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Classes. Thank you to all who completing these surveys.

Please see your Aladdin notices today for CyberSafeKids Report on our children's engagement with technology, devices, apps and games.

We would like to thank our PA for their generous donation to art equipment in the school.
Thanks to these funds, the Culture Team was able to order new paintbrushes, scissors, glue wands, oil pastels, paint palettes, clay cutting wire and water pots for different classes.
We look forward to using this equipment and creating beautiful artwork with it!
The 6th Class Culture team will distribute the equipment to classes today.

Texaco Art Competition

We are inviting our girls to take part in the 71st Annual Texaco Art Competition.

'Home Application Forms’ have been sent home.

As Texaco is a major oil company that impacts the planet’s environment, our senior girls and members of the Green School Committee have discussed their stance on taking part in this year’s Texaco Art Competition.

The girls recommend that participants use the competition as an opportunity to highlight the themes of environmental care, environmental justice and global warming in their artwork.

Your entry should not be smaller than A4 (29.7cm x 21.0cm) or larger than A2 (59.4cm x 42.0cm) before it is mounted, which is optional.

Please submit your artwork in flat format only, it should not be rolled, folded or framed.

Please return your artwork with a completed application form attached to the back to Ms. Lamont by Wednesday 26th February 2025.

Entries received after this date will not be accepted.

All details about preparing your entry can be found on the Texaco Children’s Art website:https://www.texacochildrensart.com/how-to-enter/preparing-your-entry.

Rince Ó Croí

Elize, Fiadh and Ciara participated in Feis Rince ó Croí at the weekend. Lots of medals and trophies were won!

Homework Club

The final term of Homework Club will be starting soon.

Homework Club has provided a quiet, supervised study environment for students to complete their homework. Students have had the benefit of being able to ask the supervising teachers for help with their homework if needed. If you would like an application form, please email ocarroll@hollyparkgns.ie.

This final term of Homework Club will run up until the 16th June.

Traffic Safety

Morning & afternoon one-way system:

Reminders:

  • The school has received many complaints of dangerous driving and parking in the vicinity of the school. Children and local residents are being put at risk.

  • Please use Foxrock Church car park at drop off and collection times and walk the last 6 minutes with your child.

  • Deansgrange Cemetery has requested that our parent body do not park and stride from the Cemetery carpark.

  • 80% of our pupils live within 2 kilometres of our school. Please encourage your older children to walk with their pals to and from school.

  • Please ensure that younger children are held by the hand when walking with them to and from school.

  • Please do not block the driveways of local residents when parking. Many of our residents – often elderly - are virtual prisoners in their own homes at drop off and collection times. And when they speak up are often subject to abuse.

  • In the event of an emergency, when cars are parked illegally, it is unlikely that a fire tender or ambulance would be able to access the schools, or any homes in the vicinity.

  • Hollypark GNS & BNS understand and appreciate how busy the roads are each morning. We continue to engage with DLR & An Taisce, Safe Routes to School, for a safer school zone.
